Student Expectations

We are excited to help our students improve their understanding and enjoyment of music. To get the best results from our lessons here are some foundational guidelines that we request all students and parents to follow to the best of their ability.

Students will receive direction from their teacher about what materials they need. Purchasing method books, music equipment, and practice tools such as a metronome are the responsibility of the parent and are required for quality lessons to take place. Please inquire with your teacher about what materials are needed when starting lessons.

How much should a student practice?

Practicing everyday is the best way improve an acquired skill such as a musical instrument or singing. We expect our students to practice a minimum of 30 minutes per day and 5 days per week. Having a regular and consistent practice time each day will help students “find a rhythm” with their practice routine and see consistent improvement. For younger students, parental involvement is very important and parents should be assisting their students in finding a comfortable practice routine through out the week. It is also important that their practice time is free from distractions so they can focus on their music.

What should Students be practicing?

What your student practices usually depends on their instrument choice, their style of music they have chosen, and their teacher. Most teachers assign “warm up” material such as scales or sight reading to help students learn technical skills. They will also assign songs or pieces for them to learn. Students should spend time on each concept every time they practice. Many teachers use method books with clear guidelines on what should happen. Students are encouraged to bring a “lesson notebook” so that the teacher and student can keep clear goals and expectations on what to practice. Parents are encouraged to communicate with their students teacher to gain clarity on what the student should be practicing at home. Parents are also welcome to attend the lessons and observe what their students are learning.

How many lessons a month Should a student take?

Students are expected to attend lessons on a weekly basis to develop a solid foundation for their musical education. Vacations and weeks off can be communicated in advance directly with the teacher you are enrolled with. There is a minimum requirement of 3 lessons a month on average if a student is to be enrolled in the Academy. Exceptions apply to months with nationally recognized holidays or teacher absences.

How else can they improve their musical skills?

In addition to private lessons, students should be enrolling and participating in our various events and performance opportunities. When a student has a performance, it creates a clear goal for them to practice towards and shows off what they have learned to friends and family. We offer a formal recital once a semester as well as many other opportunities to such as Street Faire and Open Mic Night events. We also offer group classes and ensembles such as Join the Band and Orchestra to provide a social environment for students to learn in a group setting. Participating in these programs and performances will increase your students enjoyment of learning and provide skills that will help them improve their musical abilities.
